Kathmandu, March 4 (RSS): Multiple election observation organizations have intensified their monitoring efforts as Nepal prepares for the House of Representatives (HoR) elections on March 5, with reports indicating a peaceful pre-poll environment and high voter enthusiasm.
The Election Observation Committee (EOC) Nepal, one of the country’s oldest permitted observer groups, has deployed 700 national election observers across various districts for both long-term and short-term (emergency) observation.
EOC Nepal highlighted the increased role of social media in this election cycle compared to previous ones.
To address potential violations of the election code of conduct, the organization has established a dedicated technical team to monitor cyberspace misuse, including the continued posting of election publicity materials, voter-influencing digital content and messages favoring candidates or parties, and the spread of misleading information.
EOC Nepal Vice-Chair Badri Prasad Siwakoti noted that such digital activities have resulted in breaches of the code of conduct. The Election Commission (EC) has authorized 39 national organizations and four international organizations to observe the March 5 voting for the 275-member House of Representatives.
Meanwhile, the General Election Observation Committee (GEOC) has reported a peaceful and smooth election atmosphere, with voters excited and eagerly awaiting the opportunity to cast their ballots. In a report released based on field visits, call center information, and consultations with political parties, voters, candidates, civil society, chief district officers, and election officials, GEOC concluded that preparations are complete, political party participation is active, coordination is effective, and security arrangements are robust.
GEOC General Secretary Krishna Man Pradhan emphasized that a “free, fair and peaceful atmosphere is in place for the election tomorrow.” National election observer Professor Chiranjivi Khanal, who was mobilized by GEOC, confirmed that election preparations are fully in place, voting centers have been established, and security agencies are coordinating responsibly. GEOC has deployed 400 election observers across 250 local levels in 36 districts to monitor the HoR polls.
Overall, the assessments from both EOC Nepal and GEOC reflect thorough preparations by the Election Commission and a positive, enthusiastic mood among voters ahead of the crucial March 5 voting.
